Telling the story of a young and innocent man and the experiences which lead to his disillusionment with modern life and eventual death, it was first published as Mon Livre d’Heures in 1919 but the copy which made $400 (£240) as part of an Art & Architecture sale at Swanns on March 4 is a 1922 English language limited edition copy, one of 600, issued in 1922. Later re-titled Passionate Journey, (and provided with an a introduction by Thomas Mann) it remains in print.
