The figures are based on six pilot schemes set up to promote the voluntary recording of finds in Kent, Norfolk, North Lincolnshire, the North West and the West Midlands and Yorkshire.

Finds include an extremely rare seventh century Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet cross from Holderness in east Yorkshire.

Known as the Portable Antiquities Scheme, it already has its own Web-site to report on progress at www.finds.org.uk
