David Hockney, Karel Appel, Georg Baselitz, Anthony Caro and Emma Sargeant are among those backing the lobbying campaign which pulls no punches in condemning the levy.
The poster concludes: “The current draft for the Directive on the Droit de Suite is the unfortunate combination of some elements of the originally noble idea of its early promoters and the more recent self-serving ambitions of collecting agencies and the well-intentioned initiatives of those who neither understand the delicate nature of the art world and its markets, nor appreciate the spirit of artists who cherish their independence and wish to make their own decisions regarding their property and their rights.”
Artists against Droit de Suite
SEVENTY-FIVE leading contemporary artists have lent their names to a poster campaign against droit de suite, claiming that the currrent EU directive on artists’ resale right deprives them of their right to freedom of choice.
