And while there were sales across the board, business was quite sensational for works under DM10,000 (say £3000) with much demand for younger, less established artists.
Galleries were selling seven-figure works although Cologne dealer Karsten Greve, who was on the fair committee, admitted that it is increasingly difficult to market objects in the million deutschmark area in a country burdened with such heavy taxation. He did, however, manage it with a major Cy Twombly.
Demand for sculpture was very strong, as it was for photography although in the latter case buying was more selective.
Cologne makes its marks with younger generation
GERMANY: WITH an attendance of 70,000, there was certainly plenty of interest in the work at the 34th Art Cologne, one of the world’s leading fairs for modern and contemporary work which showcased 276 dealers from 21 countries in Cologne Exhibition Centre between November 5 and 12.
