An incomplete Thompson’s Atlas of Scotland, an 1821 edition with only 33 (of 58) mapsheets, again rebound in modern boards with blue cloth backing, was bid to £1000.
Rather more of a surprise for the Edinburgh cataloguer was the enthusiasm with which the appearance of a mid-19th century folding, linen-backed map of London was greeted. Published c.1840 by Ruff & Co., this large and decorative Map of London from Actual Surveys, with wash and outline colouring and in the original slipcase, was valued at £100-200, but sold for £1800.
