The lion’s share of this comprised a group of around 20 lots by British designer Max Greenall, which had been consigned from a West End restaurant/club. There were around 40 Greenall pieces in total, mostly leather seat furniture in his distinctive automotive style, inspired by the seating in classic cars. All of them sold, mostly snapped up by design-conscious private buyers keen to acquire some stylish pieces at reasonable prices.
Pictured right is a typical offering, two cream and green leather armchairs from a suite with matching sofa (not shown), which sold for £1600, the lower end of its £1600-2400 estimate. The same price was paid against the same estimate for a mammoth 10ft 10in (3.3m) wide, five-seater ‘car seat’ sofa in brown and burnt orange leather with white piping while single ‘car-seat’ armchairs were making £450 apiece.
Design takes the driving seat at Chelsea
UK: WHILE their rooms are undergoing refurbishment, Lots Road Galleries (20% buyer’s premium including VAT) have changed their regular weekly sales from Monday to Sunday. The Chelsea auctioneers chose to mark the launch of their Sunday auctions on July 22 by ringing the changes in the sale content too: adding a selection of around 35 lots of contemporary and designer furniture to their traditional mix of antique and reproduction pieces.
