The late 18th century pair of Adam design marquetry side tables, 4ft 1/2in wide (1.23m), were distinguished by etched, rather than inlaid rams’ heads, and had come from a local source, but were originally from an estate near Wymondham, Suffolk. The tables had been carefully restored and the legs strengthened, but unlike many other examples they had not been reduced in height. The narrower crossbanding to one of the tables suggested they had been made a few years apart, but expectations of £10,000-12,000 were quickly surpassed – the winning bid of £110,000 (plus 10 per cent buyer’s premium) tendered by a New York dealer.
