The highlight was a late 19th century serpentine front sideboard in the Sheraton manner with a brass scroll back rail and two candle sconces. Decoratively inlaid with leaf and acanthus marquetry, competitive bidding saw it sell at £6300.
Another notable entry was a heavy late Regency ‘D’- fronted figured mahogany sideboard with spiral twist and reeded columns terminating in baluster legs. This substantial piece of furniture attracted several parties and it brought a double estimate £2100. A late Georgian mahogany kneehole desk with five drawers on reeded legs was eventually knocked down at £1400, while a 19th century ebonised and red boulle serpentine front foldover card table made a respectable £1500.
And on a different note, a polyphon coin-operated vertical musical disc player in a walnut veneered case, c.1900, found a buyer at £2400.
Staffordshire figures were the hottest ceramic ticket in the Cheshire rooms with one buyer sticking his neck out at £380 for a pair of giraffes (£50-80 estimate) while another went to £740 for a pair of milkmaids and milkboys with cows.
