Sourced locally, the 31/2in (9cm) high c.1752 mug, which was offered on September 26, was decorated in polychrome in a pattern usually only seen on teawares. Because of its perfect condition, age and rarity, the auctioneers were expecting it to exceed £10,000, but fierce bidding saw it taken to a winning £26,000 (plus 15 per cent buyer’s premium) from Bury Street dealers Albert Amor who intend to make it the highlight of their autumn exhibition.
