It had been rebound in black cloth and there was marginal worm damage, while some of the 14 plates were foxed and the map had tape repairs to the reverse. Nevertheless, this 1811 account of Kirkpatrick’s 1793 mission to Nepal at a time when the country was requesting aid and assistance from Britain during quarrels with Tibet and the Chinese, is an important work. A year or so ago, a better copy made £1150 at Bloomsbury.
• Shaken in stained and rubbed purple cloth covers, an 1870 (seventh) edition of an Indian Domestic Economy and Receipt Book issued by Higginbotham of Madras was sold for £110.
• Bound in half calf gilt, a 30-vol. Chapman & Hall set of the works of Charles Dickens, c.1885, made £1100.
• The Golliwogg at the Seaside of 1898 was coming loose from its rubbed pictorial boards, but found a buyer at £280.

THE COPY of Colonel William Fitzpatrick’s Account of the Kingdom of Nepaul... that sold for £380 in this Somerset sale at Greenslade Taylor Hunt on 13 December was not a great one.
