It has now been revealed that the mug was bought by Manchester Art Gallery and has just gone on display in the CIS Manchester gallery, a permanent space devoted to the development of art and design in the city over the past 200 years.
The two foundries depicted are the Soho Foundry, based at Ancoats, a part of central Manchester that was at the heart of the 19th century city’s industrial revolution, and the Phoenix foundry, which was at Swan Street in the Shudehill area.
