Both appeal to contemporary furnishing trends. Both continue to raise twice the interest generated by objects of more age and quality.

Three rare smooth-glazed monochromes turned up at Rendells (10% buyer's premium) of Stonepark, near Ashburton last month, courtesy of a local lady and her carrier bag. The vases were previously used as display accessories in a shop in Paignton.

They created a flood of enquiries from the Internet and six telephone lines and several absentee bids guaranteed a good result.

The first, a 7in (18cm) high rectangular white gloss vase with a diamond shaped cut out to the base sold at £1800 to a telephone bidder from the Welsh borders. The second, a similar vase with four applied circles to the base sold on the telephone to a prominent South West collector for £1650. The third, identical to the first except finished in a mottled brown gloss, sold to a local collector in the room for £1250.
