A superb mahogany breakfront side cabinet.
This full-blown Regency piece, with bold gilt metal mounts in the manner of either Thomas Hope or George Smith, had been discovered by the Grantham auctioneers in an unassuming terrace house in Stamford. It had been bought by the parents of the consignor during the war from the local dealer Scotney & Son. An original invoice dated 1942 listed the price as £26 and 5s. Golding Young described the 5ft (1.52m) wide cabinet as the best piece of furniture they had sold since a Chippendale bookcase had made £1700 in 1964. They fielded serious bids from America but it was won by a London dealer.
