Redmore is one of the most highly regarded Yorkshire marine painters and these two works were the best that David Duggleby himself had ever seen. The auctioneers were able to display them in their newly built picture gallery, which meant that the viewing took place in improved surroundings with better lighting.
They had come from a local consignor who had owned them for 50 years. Both went to the same private buyer on commission, underbid by the trade.
Both of the 13 1/2 x 23 1/4in (34 x 59cm) oil on canvases were signed and dated 1866 and came in their original frames.
The highest price of the two was for Unloading Boats on the Beach at Bamburgh, shown right, which made £16,400 and appears to be the second highest ever seen for a Redmore at auction.
Shipping off the Coast took a lower £11,200 mainly due to the fact that the canvas had been relined in the 1980s.
The sale also saw a signed Louis Atkinson Grimshaw (1870-1944) oil, measuring 16 1/2in x 2ft 5 1/2in (42 x 75cm), make £13,400, selling to a trade buyer. Liverpool Quay by Moonlight had come from a Midlands vendor and was in untouched condition. It did, however, show signs of craquelure and needed relining.
