It was the first time that "real time" online bidding via the-saleroom.com had been conducted outside the UK and Baldwin's declared themselves delighted with the results.
The contribution of internet bidders from Australia, China, the Netherlands, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaya, Russia, the UK and USA accounted for approximately eight per cent of the $780,000 sale total.
As well as seeing lots on their computer screen as they appeared in the room, the 30-plus online bidders were able to experience the full atmosphere of the saleroom via a live audio feed direct from The Holiday Inn Golden Mile in Kowloon.
Internet bidders were particularly active in the banknote section, while another internet buyer tendered one of the higher prices of the day - $18,000 (estimate $8000-10,000) for a mint China Republic, Sun Yat-Sen "Mausoleum" dollar of 1927.
"Several of our regular bidders said that their online experience was an exciting substitute for the real thing, and local buyers in the room were frozen with astonishment at the prices achieved," Baldwin director Seth Freeman told ATG.
