Among the highlights of the £136,000 sale was a 13-strong set of 18th century wine glasses with faceted stems and bowls engraved with the names of members of the Welsh Jacobite society, the Cycle of the White Rose.
The Cycle met with some regularity as an aristocratic dining club between 1724 and 1829: the names engraved on these glasses date them to between 1770 and 1775.
Offered as 13 lots, they sold to five different buyers for a total of £21,600 (plus 15 per cent buyer's premium), with prices ranging from £500 for a glass with a substantial chip to the foot rim engraved Hon. R. Barry (Richard Barry of Marbury Hall, Co. Chester) to the £2600 that rewarded the well-preserved glass for Sir W.W. Wynn, the 4th Baronet of Wynnstay, Mayor of Chester and son of the founder of the society.
