The event is the first to be aimed at the whole auctioneering community and will be hosted by Antiques Trade Gazette in association with RICS, SOFAA and NAVA.
“Business conditions are tough for everyone,” says ATG editor-in-chief Mark Bridge. “We felt the time was right to bring the country’s auctioneers together to assess how well the business has adapted to the 21st century and to look to the future.
“We have called the conference Prospering in a Downturn. In good times and in bad, traditional salerooms have played an important role in the community, and I am sure they will continue to do so. One object of this conference is to make sure that the legacies of the past are not standing in the way of continuing prosperity.
“At the same time, it is a chance to share ideas. While dealers tend to meet regularly at fairs, auctioneers have fewer opportunities to get together. A venue at the NEC means it is accessible to everyone and there will be a dinner the night before to give delegates a chance to socialise.“
The conference itself will start with an honest assessment of the realities of the modern retail market, followed by reviews of cases where innovation has opened up new markets.
The afternoon session will focus on practical methods of reducing costs and maximising publicity, particularly with the use of modern technology.
Digital photography will be a key topic and the price of the conference will include the chance to book a one-to-one session with a professional tutor on getting the most out of your digital camera.
