The Edenbridge dealers, BADA and LAPADA stalwarts who specialised in traditional 18th and 19th century English furniture, are closing after nearly a century in business.
In the wake of the recent BADA Fair where Chevertons were exhibiting, director Angus Adam told ATG: “The antiques business has changed in the last few years – there’s not enough good stock coming onto the market that we can offer at the right price. I will carry on my own business with a new shop [the name is yet to be decided] in Forest Row, Sussex and will continue to do the major fairs”.
Chevertons became legendary under the ownership of David Adam, Angus’s father. In the 1970s it was one of the largest antiques businesses in the country, with showrooms in Edenbridge and a US warehouse in Long Island, New York.
Shipments were sent to and from America every two weeks and on Tuesday nights dealers would queue up in their cars to see the new stock made available on Wednesday morning.
David Adam retired in 2006 when the long-established shop on Church Street in Edenbridge was closed, later to become the BADA collective, The Edenbridge Galleries.
Chevertons have since traded from a large premises behind Angus Adam’s home in Framfield, East Sussex.
