p>Among them was this George I Irish silver baluster jug by Thomas Bolton, Dublin, 1719, with a domed cover to both the jug and spout.
The 39.25oz jug, with a replacement wooden handle, was engraved with the arms of HALL of Wisborough, Kent (granted in 1599) impaling HARVEY and The Gift of Mrs Susanna Hall to Mrs Eleanor Stannard 1752 within a baroque cartouche.
Clive Stewart-Lockhart of Dreweatts was unsure of the jug’s intended purpose as, although similar in form to a chocolate pot, it lacked a hole in the cover for a stirrer. He suspects it may have been used for small beer.
It was consigned as part of the estate of the late Professor Rupert Hall and Mrs Hall, keen collectors from Tackley, Oxfordshire. Estimated at £5000-8000, it sold to the London trade at £32,000.
A buyer’s premium of 20/12% was charged.
