After this date it will no longer have legal tender status and retailers will not have to accept the note in payment. The note has been gradually replaced by the Adam Smith £20 which was introduced in 2007.
The withdrawal is being overseen by the Notes Division team at the Bank of England, which is responsible for the issue and effective distribution of all Bank of England banknotes.
