This affiliation gives Hermann Historica a permanent presence in Bloomsbury Auctions’ Mayfair premises in Maddox Street, London as well as representative offices in both New York and Rome. In turn, Dreweatts will establish a branch in Hermann Historica’s Munich headquarters, with a view to developing a meaningful foothold in the German-speaking European market.
This news coincides with Hermann Historica’s appointment of Nick McCullough – former head of Christie’s arms and armour department – as an international consultant. He will be based in Maddox Street when not on the road or working from his offices in West Sussex.
Dreweatts’ next auction of antique arms and militaria will be at their Apsley Road saleroom in Bristol on March 23, while Hermann Historica’s series of spring sales will take place in their Munich gallery from April 7-16.
No dates have yet been set for the two companies to hold sales in each other’s premises though it is expected that this will follow soon.
Both companies say that this is a commercial trading alliance and that there are no plans to merge the businesses, now or in the future.
The Munich firm, with a turnover in excess of 10m euros in 2009, has its origins in the 1970s, having been renamed Hermann Historica in 1982 under Wolfgang Hermann and Ernst-Ludwig Wagner.
