Catalogued as probably Kirman, from south east Persia, the rare 8ft 9in x 6ft 5in (2.97 x 1.96m) piece was estimated at $5m-7m at the auction on June 5.
The previous auction record was $9.6m taken by Christie's for another Persian carpet sold in London in April 2010.
