A well-known champion of artists in north-west England, Burkett died aged 90 in November 2014. Close to 600 lots came from her former home, Isel Hall on the northern banks of the River Derwent in Cumbria. They were offered at Mitchells' September 3-4 auction.

Highlights offered across the two days included 140 'painted letters' from Percy Kelly (1918-93) to Burkett (many of them used in the book Dear Mary, Love Percy - A Creative Thread and a collection of studio pottery featuring eight well-received pieces by the Austrian-born British studio potter Lucie Rie (1902-95).

Selling at a treble-estimate £19,000 was the 8in (20cm) flared porcelain bowl with a turquoise glaze and a metallic rim shown here. In excellent condition, it came with a catalogue for a 1990 exhibition at Galerie Besson and was pitched at £6000-9000.

In December, Woolley & Wallis in Salisbury sold a larger matt blue bowl for £47,000, a record for Rie.

The buyer's premium was 20%.

A full report of the sale of the Mary Burkett collection at Mitchells will appear in next week's ATG print publication.
