The £15m collection of English clocks and wristwatches was formed over 30 years by the Channel Islands businessman Tom Scott (1944-2012).

Beating Christie’s to the deal, Carter Marsh offered to sell the collection on a commission across a five-month period beginning first with a highlights show at Masterpiece in June and then at exhibitions in July and November in Winchester.

Of the 110 items in the collection, 96 have sold.

They include the Medici Tompion, an ebony and gilt-brass mounted grande sonnerie table clock c.1696. Its sale for a price in the region of £4.5m was finalised at Masterpiece.

“It has worked out well for everyone concerned – and the market too,” said Jonathan Carter. “We have sold well but we have also sold at the right price.“
