Nixi Cura, who is chairing Lyon & Turnbull and ATG’s second annual Asian Art in London panel discussion next week, has argued academia should value the contribution of the art market.

As programme director of Arts in China for Christie’s Education, Cura interacts with both worlds.

She explains: “There is bias among art historians against the market. Some believe the market is evil and controls prices. But without the market there is no art history. How would we have collectors and collections without a market?”

Cura, who is an honorary research fellow at the University of Glasgow, said the key is to teach ethical practices and encourage art historians to realise the importance of the market.

Next Generation

Cura will chair Lyon & Turnbull and ATG’s ‘Forecasting the future: the next generation’ discussion on November 7 at 2pm at Asia House in London as part of Asian Art in London.

Topics to be discussed will include: who is the next generation and what makes them different, and is it possible to effect change in the art market or merely observe trends?

The three panellists are: Lyon & Turnbull Asian art consultant Li-Chun Hu, Littleton & Hennessy consultant and dealer Mark Slaats and Paul Ruitenbeek, who has recently joined his family’s consultancy Feng-Chun Ma in Amsterdam.

Places are free but need to be booked. RSVP to ling.zhu@lyonandturnbull.com
