The sale in Dudley includes a series of lots of memorabilia from the rock band such as a Bueche Girod 9ct gold watch given by The Who drummer Keith Moon to his personal assistant Peter "Dougal" Butler with an estimate of £2000-3000.
The gift was a thank-you for saving Moon’s life. A signed letter from Butler comes with the lot, confirming the provenance and authenticity. Butler had persuaded Moon to go to Weybridge hospital in July 1972 for rehabilitation to help with his drink problem. The lot also includes a bill from the Surrey hospital addressed to Moon for the four-day stay in the private ward.
Moon, who was an alcoholic, died in 1978 from an overdose of pills that were supposed to help him control his alcoholism.
Other lots in the sale include a jacket worn by The Who bass guitarist John Entwistle. The leather jacket by Versace, worn by Entwistle at the Royal Albert Hall concert in February 2002, has an estimate of £2,500-5,000.
Entwistle’s Anello & Davide heeled tan suede boots are part of a lot that comprises a pair of black Wrangler jeans and a Sheplers long sleeve black Western style shirt. The three items were previously purchased at the Sotheby’s sale in London in May 2003 as part of the guitarist’s collection.
