Signed for Robert Wallace Martin and dated May 1889, it is one of a small number of birds thought to be based on caricature prints of the former Prime Minister.

Last seen at Phillips in London in 1996, it was part of a UK collection of 23 figural groups (19 wally bird jars and four grotesques) assembled since the early 1990s. The sale took place at Phillips in New York on December 15.

The previous high for Martinware was a bird jar of the same size dated 9-1898 sold for £75,000 at Woolley & Wallis in June 2014.
