Sotheby’s Hong Kong conducted a $HK55m sale of 93 lots titled ‘Roger Keverne – 50 Years in the Trade’ as part of the recent HK$22bn ($285m) series.
Seventy-year-old Keverne is now considering a step back from the commercial world. He will, however, continue to deal from his Clifford Street gallery and is this year’s chairman of Asian Art in London running from November 3-12.
Keverne believes he inherited an inclination to hoard from his mother who was a collector of English ceramics. Some of the items sold by Sotheby’s had emerged from storage wrapped in newspaper pages from the 1970s.
Leading proceedings at HK$4m was a 17th century bamboo ‘riverscape’ brushpot by Zhang Xihuang.
Zhang was especially renowned for his use of the liuqing technique, a method of carving contrasting the smooth greenish bamboo skin and the darker and more fibrous inner layer of the stalk.

The sale took place on October 5 and the buyer’s premium was 25/20/12%.
