The lounge chair was made by the Brazilian self-taught designer and artist Jose Zanine Caldas (1919-2001). It was produced by Moveis Aristicos Z, which Caldas launched in 1948, and which offered simple, organically shaped plywood pieces that were priced accessibly for emerging collectors.
It is on view at the stand of Galerie le Beau from Brussels.
PAD prizes were awarded yesterday by a judging panel presided over by Jasper Conran and including Serpentine Galleries CEO Yana Peel, designer Tom Dixon and Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic.
The award for best contemporary design went to Copper (2017), a corner bench by Valentin Loellmann in charred oak and copper, at the stand of Galerie Gosserez of Paris. Rose Uniacke of London won the award for best stand.
PAD London runs at Mayfair’s Berkeley Square until October 8. It features 20th century art, design and decorative arts.
