The database, containing more than 2.3m records representing 4m objects with millions of images, is used by researchers, dealers, historians and students. The system began experiencing issues on August 8 and the museum said the external company that manages the website “immediately investigated” the problems.

In a statement the museum said: “The museum recognises the huge importance of this free resource… The issues are complex and are being continually monitored to ensure the service can provide members of the public access to the museum’s collection online.

“The trustees of the British Museum are committed to making the collection freely accessible to a global audience and Collection Online plays an important part in this.”
