The watch has a gilt metal and green shagreen covered outer case and is by John Cater of London. Inside is a plain gold-coloured metal case, which in turn holds a bossed and chased centre case with two classical figures, attendants and pyramids in the background. It is estimated at £1000-1500.
The watch is from collection of 32 pocket watches and 23 carriage clocks assembled by Kent horologist Ray Butcher. It is estimated to take a total of around £20,000.
“Mr Butcher was a true family man who lived in Kent for the past 40 years. We are honoured that he chose his local saleroom to conduct the sale,” said auctioneer and managing director Tony Pratt.
The late Mr Butcher was the founder of a building business and member of the Antiquarian Horological Society.

Also included in the collection and estimated at £1000-15000 is an early George III silver and green shagreen covered pair-cased verge pocket watch by Thomas Mudge of London, an eminent maker and member of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1738 and a liveryman in 1766.
A highlight among the carriage clocks is a mid-19th century French example by Bolviller of Paris with chronometer escapement striking on a bell. Its ornate gilt brass and bevelled glass rectangular case is cast with bold leaf scroll ornamentation and is estimated at £800-1200.
The sale of fine art and antiques in which the Ray Butcher collection appears takes place from April 4-5.
