The 10in (25cm) high cast was based on the original life-size marble sculpture of 1886.

In 1898 Rodin commissioned the Barbedienne Foundry in Paris with the execution of different sized versions in bronze. Over the years, this model with the official title Le baiser, 4ème réduction ou petit modèle, was cast in an edition of approximately 100.

Nagel’s figure was sold by Barbedienne in April 1907 and, at the auction on November 15 was expected to bring €150,000. In the event it was knocked down at €210,000 (£185,840).

As chance would have it, another version from this series was sold on the same day on the other side of the Atlantic. Sotheby’s New York achieved $280,000 (£215,385) for their model from January 1913.
