Carlos Picón, who is currently a curator running the department of Greek and Roman art at The Met, will join as director to run the US gallery.
Having worked at the museum for 30 years he will leave later this year to run the gallery which will open by Christmas at 38 East 70th Street in New York’s Upper East Side, by appointment only.
Carlos Picón, who is currently a curator running the department of Greek and Roman art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, will join Colnaghi as a director to run its new New York gallery.
Colnaghi’s Jorge Coll and Nicolas Cortés said Picón shares their “determination to champion historical art to a younger audience encouraging both new collectors and the museum patrons of the future”.
Picón said: “While I’m ready to retire from my role at The Met, I know I still have time for another adventure in my career and it feels perfect that this should be working with Jorge and Nicolas.”
Founded in 1760, Colnaghi is among the oldest galleries in the history of the art market. In 2015 owner Konrad Berheimer entered into a joint venture with Coll and Cortés who also run their Spanish dealership Coll & Cortés.
