The painting, A Reverie (1892), is being offered by London’s Agnews Gallery for £3.6m. A recent donation by The Friends of York Art Gallery, comprised of two bequests of £160,000 and £20,000, has been put towards the total. The Friends are also assisting in further fundraising efforts.

“This is a rare opportunity for a public collection to acquire such a significant work,” said curator Laura Turner. “It would allow us to secure a significant part of York’s artistic heritage to be enjoyed by visitors for years to come.”

The gallery has also applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Art Fund as well as the public for additional support.

York Art Gallery’s exhibition Albert Moore: Of Beauty and Aesthetics (which does not include A Reverie) continues until October 1.
