Sotheby’s said he will lead its development of key relationships with clients in the UK and will focus on the growth of its significant house and single-owner sales.

Tad Smith, president and chief executive of Sotheby’s, said: “Harry is one of those remarkable forces of nature that attracts everyone to it. He is a master on the rostrum and that passion and charisma carry through everything he does.”

Lord Dalmeny officially started at Sotheby’s as a graduate trainee in 1990.

However the firm said his “journey with the auction house really began in 1977, when a nine-year old Harry watched as his family possessions at Mentmore Towers sold by Sotheby’s, following his grandfather’s passing".

Dalmeny has lead sales of personal collections including of Ava Gardner, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire with the Chatsworth Attic sale in 2010.
