The decision is part of a “restructuring programme” by the new owner, private equity group Epiris, which bought the auction house in September.

Bonhams global chief executive Matthew Girling said: “While it is sad to see the restaurant close, our priority is to focus on our core business of auctioneering.”

The private equity firm is expected to focus on investing to grow the auction house’s market share and expand in the US but cut costs in its ‘non-core’ operations.

The restaurant opened in January 2015 at its newly refurbished Bond Street head office and saleroom, under head chef Tom Kemble. It was awarded a Michelin star in the autumn of that year. The restaurant, under current head chef Theo Clench, will be open for bookings until December 19 and close on December 21. The Bonhams café will continue to operate.
