Paxton House hosts The Paxton Style: Neat and Substantially Good from June 5 - August 28. It showcases its own Chippendale pieces alongside loans from the V&A and National Museums Scotland.
The exhibition is part of the Chippendale 300 programme, which honours the life and creations of the furniture designer. Events, lectures and masterclasses are set to be held during the show, including a talk by Prof David Jones on the Paxton style, and another on the furniture designer’s contribution to other styles by James Lomax of the Chippendale Society.
Much of the Chippendale furniture in Paxton House was created specifically for its setting by the designer or his workshop from 1774-91. Today, the 18th century home contains holds one of the largest selections of such items in the world.
Curator Fiona Salvesen Murrell has researched and catalogued the collection during the past two years with the support of a Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Grant from Art Fund. The exhibition is supported by the same organisation along with the Garfield Weston Foundation through the Weston Loan Programme, which has enabled key loans.
