Chinese New Year ushers in the Year of the Dog: Check out these five dog-related antiques and artworks

Whether you’re lucky enough to be from the year of the dog (2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958, 1946 and 1934) or are just a dog lover, here’s a look at five fabulous canines – and their related paraphernalia – on offer around the art and antiques trade.

Calendar canines

Grosvenor Prints offers this colour photogravure for £320.

Grosvenor Prints gallery in Covent Garden offers a series of dog pictures by British-American canine painter Maud Alice Earl (1864-1943), many taken from The Sportman’s Calendar, such as this work, June – The Long Vacation. Her work is known for the accuracy with which it depicts different breeds and her clients included Queen Victoria. This colour photogravure is a signed artist proof measuring 9 x 14in (22 x 35cm) and is offered for £320.

Fido’s finery 

This delicate silver William & Mary piece dated 1691, inscribed with Miss R Jenkins, Charlton Hill, is estimated at £2000-3000 in the Tennants March 17 auction.

This 19^th century brass dog collar is one of 31 examples from private collections going under the hammer at Tennants of Leyburn in North Yorkshire on March 17. It is the earliest example, a delicate silver William & Mary piece dated 1691 and inscribed Miss R Jenkins, Charlton Hill. It is estimated at £2000-3000.

Bronze bowzer 

Cold-painted bronze sculpture of a bulldog by the Viennese factory of Franz Bergmann, which is estimated at £1500-2000 in Hannam’s auction on February 28-March 2.

Hannam’s auction in Selborne, Hampshire, on February 28-March 2 will incorporate a private collection of Austrian cold-painted bronze sculptures, including a number by the Viennese factory of Franz Bergmann (1861-1936). A large 12½ x 8in (32 x 20cm) early 20th century bronze figure of a bulldog in a red stud collar is estimated at £1500-2000.

Tail-wagging table

Supported by a pair of dogs, this Franz Joseph I polychrome painted and walnut centre table is offered by Mayfair gallery Ronald Phillips. Each of the dogs is fitted with a collar inscribed Graf Lamberg referring to their owner and the provenance of the table. Made in Austria c.1850, the table measures 2ft 10in (85.5cm) high and is offered for more than £100,000.

Mountain mastiff 

The painting of a dog by Il Guercino that carries an estimate of £80,000-120,000 at Cheffins.

This previously unrecorded painting, attributed to the Italian Old Master Giovanni Francesco Barbieri or ‘il Guercino’, will be offered at Cambridge auction house Cheffins on March 7-8. It depicts an Italian mastiff in a mountainous landscape. While dogs feature in other Guercino paintings, this example is one of very few works where the artist focused solely on an individual animal. It has an estimate of £80,000-120,000.
