The exhibition, Glimpses of Eternity, takes place at Westminster Abbey from today (March 17) and runs until May 16.
Creswell was artist in residence at the Abbey between 2011-2017 and was commissioned by the Royal Collection to paint the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29, 2011. Included in this exhibition and on public display for the first time are the artist’s sketchbook from the ceremony in Westminster Abbey.
Alexander Creswell said: “I am immensely honoured to have had the opportunity to create a collection of watercolours of Westminster Abbey. The Abbey is far more complex than I had ever imagined. It is a place of worship, theatre of state, resting place of kings and nobles, of statesmen and poets, memorial to the great and repository of excellence.”
Creswell (b.1957) was also commissioned by The Royal Collection in 1992 to depict Windsor Castle after the fire and its restoration in 1997. These paintings were exhibited at Windsor Castle and published in the book Out of the Ashes.
