2. DH Lawrence postcard
This postcard is believed to have been penned by the English writer and poet DH Lawrence to a young woman in Nottinghamshire more than 100 years ago.
Handwritten and signed on a postcard with a picture of Old School House and Rock Cottages in Shirebrook, the correspondence is estimated at £200-250 in Hansons’ Library Auction at Bishton Hall in Staffordshire on July 31
Lawrence was far from impressed by the north Derbyshire town, which he visited in 1911. In the postcard, addressed to Miss N Holderness of a Nottinghamshire family he became acquainted with in Ilkeston, he wrote: I have got here but had to bike – not a single train. It is an awful fag. Shirebrook is a most hideous place – I contrast it with Eakring. Keep well – love to all – D H Lawrence.
