An oil study by the Danish artist Peder Severin Kroyer for one of his best known and final masterworks has sold for €580,000 (£495,725) at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen.

This dramatic study for the last masterwork produced by the Danish artist Peder Severin Kroyer (1851-1909) will be one of the highlights of the paintings and drawings sale at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen later this month.

The uncompromising Danish furniture designer/carpenter Peder Moos (1906-91) carefully hand-crafted virtually all his distinctive furniture.

This 19th century French ormolu-mounted boulle side cabinet is attributed to the Paris-based ébéniste-marqueteur Mathieu Befort (1813-80).

Pictured right is one of two major pieces of Georg Jensen silver stolen in a raid on Denmark’s National Art Gallery in the early hours of May 2. The thieves involved got away with an estimated £70,000 worth of silver that formed part of an exhibition featuring the work of the celebrated Danish silversmith.

ONE of the more unusual characters of the so-called ‘Golden Age’ of Danish art was Sally Henriques (1815-1886). Firstly, contrary to what the name might suggest, Sally was a man. Secondly he was Jewish. And thirdly he painted for just four years from 1841-45 before becoming – in a neat reversal of the career of Georges Braque – a house painter.

DENMARK: The modern design session of Bruun-Rasmussen’s (25% buyer’s premium incl. VAT) mixed 5-day sale from August 5–9 included a smattering of pieces from each of the big Scandinavian names: Just Anderson, Axel Salto, Poul Henningsen, Hans J. Wegner, Mogens Koch and Kaare Klint all put in an appearance, but the main focus was on Finn Juhl.

We reported in last week’s Antiques Trade Gazette's Art Market pages on the Ellekilde, Copenhagen sale and reflected on the popularity of Scandinavian interiors. An altogether different Danish artist to enjoy success at that sale was Gerda Wegener (1885-1940), a magazine illustrator, whose work proves especially popular with an American audience.

DENMARK: Given the continuing vogue for Scandinavian interiors, it comes as no surprise that the first modern art and design auction to be held by Danish auctioneers Bruun Rasmussen (25% buyer’s premium including VAT) in Århus last month on February 12, met with very favourable results.
