Jethro Buck’s What’s going on here (2016) is completed in natural pigment and gum Arabic on Sanganer paper and measures 18 x 16in (40 x 29cm).
Buck uses traditional techniques and handground natural pigments in his paintings. “To paint in this way you have to slow down. You lose yourself in the painting – and time is directly linked to your experience of it,” he says.
The Oxford-born artist was awarded a grant from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage in 2012 and used the award to study Indian miniature painting under the miniaturist Ajay Sharma in Rajasthan, the centre for one of the schools of miniature painting.
“I like to capture something the camera can’t,” adds Buck, whose studio is based in Hackney Wick. Works at the show, running at Crane Kalman’s Brompton Road gallery from May 2-27, are priced from £3000-10,000.
