Chinese huanghuali and hardwood side table estimated at $20,000-40,000 at James D Julia’s auction on August 16-18.
Among the potential highlights is this Chinese 6ft 5in (1.65m) wide huanghuali and hardwood side table (above).
The top is composed of a single panel of quarter-inch thick huanghuali and has an openwork carved apron.
Chinese furniture from prized hardwoods is very much to today’s collecting taste. This piece has the bonus of a long provenance. The table belonged to Janet and Richard Hobart and was bought in Beijing in 1923.
The Hobarts put together a collection of Chinese works of art, some of which was sold at auction by Sotheby’s in 1969 and 1970, and elements of it are now in various institutions in the US and UK. This piece, however, has remained in the family. It has an estimate of $20,000-40,000.
