It was hammered down at $47,500 (£36,500) – an auction record for Gaskin jewellery.
One of three pieces purchased by the vendor from London’s Tadema Gallery (it comes in a bespoke Tadema case), it is similar to a necklace titled Pink Clover that sold through the Baillie Gallery in 1909 and is pictured in the Gaskins’ sketchbook.
From the same consignor came a pendant with an enamel roundel of a girl in a blue dress and cream pinafore by Ellie Ward.
This piece – with an inscription suggesting it was made for Jocelyne Verney Gaskin, the daughter of Arthur and Georgie – was exhibited at the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society in 1903 and provided one of the cover illustrations to the exhibition catalogue of Arthur & Georgie Gaskin, published by the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery in 1981.
It was last on the market in 2013 when it took £3000 as part of Dreweatts’ sale of items from the collection of West Midland brewer and art patron Laurence W Hodson (1863-1933). Pitched in Boston at $6000-8000, it took $7000 (£5400).
