Consigned from a private collection, the statue was pursued to £11,000, more than 12 times its guide.

The 10in (26cm) high piece, based on the famous Aphrodite of Knidos statue, had last sold at Sotheby’s back in 1991.

The auction house said the price was “testament to the popularity of Aphrodite as a decorative piece”, but were unable to say what period the piece came from.

Other highlights from the 243-lot sale included a pair of strikingly modern Anatolian pottery vessels, which sold for a multi-estimate £5500, a market-fresh Etruscan bronze helmet at £4000 and a well-preserved Egyptian wooden shabti at £3400.
