It depicts the thalamus, a part of the brain often referred to as the ‘Main Station’ or the ‘Grand Central Station’, that relays sensory impulses from receptors in various parts of the body to the cerebral cortex.
Basquiat uses the concept of the brain as a station, mapping out ‘platforms’ and splitting the brain laterally like two separate islands – possibly representing Manhattan and Long Island.
It was acquired directly from the artist by Galerie Thaddeus Ropac in Austria, where it was subsequently bought by the vendor.
