The Colonial and Indian Exhibition of 1886 held in South Kensington to – in the words of the Prince of Wales – “stimulate commerce and strengthen the bonds of union now existing in every portion of Her Majesty’s Empire”, included a spectacular collection of Indian jewels.

This Giuliano seed pearl, ruby and enamel fringe necklace dates from that time. It came for sale at Chiswick Auctions (22% buyer’ s premium) on May 9 where, estimated at £8000- £10,000, it sold at £22,000.

Similar items were offered in Sotheby’s New York 2006 sale of the Siegel collection, while last year the saleroom sold an Indian-style necklace with cabochon sapphire terminals by Carlo and Arthur Giuliano at $34,000 (£28,300).
