The appropriately titled Glasgow Boys features works by the eponymous group of around 20 Scottish artists that embraced a new, modern style of paintings at the end of the 19th century.
Many of the ‘members’ studied at Parisian teaching ateliers in the 1880s and from around 1890-1910 produced a series of works that portrayed the rural landscape with realism, working out of doors and using French-inspired tonal and compositional techniques.
Among the artists featured at the Dundas Street gallery are some of the movement’s leading practitioners such as Arthur Melville as well as examples by John Quinton Pringle, EA Walton James Paterson and James Whitelaw Hamilton.
Meanwhile, Ornis Logos, which the FAS features as its Edinburgh Festival exhibition, brings together a selection of contemporary and historic works, all of which take birds as a theme. The Glasgow studio Timorous Beasties will contribute a large installation with hanging fabrics and the taxidermy artist Fiona Dean displays some of her creations.
Other works created by Scottish artists dating from 1650 to the 20th century will also appear.
Works by 17th century still-life painter William Gouw Ferguson, 19th century animal painter Edwin Alexander and 20th century painter and printmaker George William Lennox Paterson are included.
