A quote from their father accompanies each day of the year but while this is not normally an expensive book, the example offered in a Lawrences (22% buyer’s premium) sale of June 16 was different.

Inscribed “…from her loving and grateful Mamma”, it was one owned by Nina, eldest daughter of Edinburgh publisher Robert Chambers, who that same year had married businessman and Liberal politician Robert Lehmann.

The couple’s social circle included many well-known writers of the time. Two of the more distinguished of that number, Wilkie Collins and Robert Barrett Browning, signed Nina’s copy.

It sold for £1750.
