Sotheby's - Rossetti portrait
Last seen publicly in 1959, this Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-82) chalk and pencil portrait of actress Louisa Ruth Maynard (1831-1921), known by her stage-name Miss Herbert, is on offer at Sotheby’s Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist Art sale on July 13.
Signed and dated to 1876, the small 9½ x 7½in (24 x 19cm) portrait was probably commissioned in 1876 by the sitter and her husband John Downes Rochfort. The estimate is £70,000-100,000.
Chiswick Auctions - Rutherford's Camden

An obscure work by Harry Rutherford (1903-85) will appear at Chiswick Auctions’ June 13 sale in Colville Road. Camden Town (1933), a 23in x 2ft 5in (60 x 75cm) oil on canvas, was painted after the artist moved to north-west London in the early 1930s to continue his studies with his mentor, Walter Sickert.
It has been consigned from a private London collection where it has resided since 1977. It carries an estimate of £2000-3000.

The work belongs to the cycle of paintings ‘From the Life of Christ’, and the artist wrote that this was “the work to which I devoted almost all my life”.
Consigned from a European collection, the 4ft 6in (1.39m) square oil on canvas was included in Polenov’s list of works from 1903-14, and was exhibited at least twice in his lifetime.

A Thomas Hudson (1701-79) portrait will go under the hammer in Bonhams’ Old Master sale in New Bond Street on July 5.
The sitter is Albinia Bertie (1738-1816), who married George Hobart, 3rd Earl of Buckinghamshire, in 1757. She was the daughter of Lord Vere Bertie and Anne Casey, and through her mother she inherited the estate of Branston in Lincolnshire. The 4ft 2in x 3ft 4in (1.25 x 1m) portrait is estimated at £60,000-80,000.
Pangolin - Iron sculpture

Pangolin will bring this iron work by British sculptor Geoffrey Clarke (1924-2014) to Masterpiece London. Figure (1952) is the largest iron piece from the artist’s oeuvre at 5ft 1in x 22in (1.55m x 56cm) high and is priced at £120,000.

Sotheby’s will offer this interior scene by Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) on June 6 in New Bond Street.
White Doors, a 15½ x 17in (39 x 42cm) oil on canvas, was painted in 1899 and comes from the estate of Jens Risom, the renowned Danish American furniture designer best known for his mass-produced ‘Risom Chair’. Estimated at £400,000-600,000.

Phillips - Freud's whippet

Phillips’ Evening & Day Editions sale, held at its Berkeley Square saleroom on June 7, will include this etched work of Lucian Freud’s (1922-2011) dog, Pluto (1988).
Freud admired dogs for their “ready eagerness, their animal pragmatism” and stated: “I like people to look as natural and as physically at ease as animals, as Pluto my whippet.”
The 13in x 2ft (32 x 60cm) work is numbered 32/40 in pencil and is estimated at £70,000-100,000.
